June 10th 2004 Andy Gates

Tonight's guest singer / guitarist is new to our club despite his long experience in music entertainment. Andy Gates is a native of Widnes (a Scouser) who has been involved in show business for 30 years or more. Originally he was in a Duo with his brother, later trios and for the last 17 years as a solo artiste.
He has concentrated on the latter for the last 7 years.
Due to other local attractions, our audience was less than usual, which was a pity, as Andy provided as good a show as you can hope to see.
He has a pleasant personality, warm nature and the humour and wit typical of Liverpudlians, all of which made it easy to develop a rapport with club members, but best of all he has a super voice.
His programme ran the whole gamut of Country music from the pre-war 'Red River Valley' to the latest Kenny Rogers hit ' Buy me a Rose' but the high lights for me were the Dr. Hook and Raymond Froggatt numbers.
His version of ' Everybody's Makin' it Big But Me' Just like the Movies, and ' Sylvia's Mother Said ' were so reminiscent of Denis Locorriere & Co you thought the band were on stage.
With Froggy he chose such lesser known songs as ' Don't Let Me Cry Again ' and the way he delivered ' I Will See You Again ' was so powerful that the words merely echoed the wishes of our members, and i am sure that wish will be fulfilled after such an evening of wonderful entertainment.
