November 3rd 2005 PHIL and KEN
For an evening full of fun, laughter and great Country Music, you cannot beat this dynamic duo from Doncaster . Tonight, as usual, they had the audience eating out of their hands and responding with enthusiastic applause to each and every song. Both members of this duo have powerful melodic voices and each harmonises excellently whoever takes the lead. We had a good mix of uptempo numbers and ballads, and all of the classic country genre. The Linedancers particularly enjoyed and filled the floor to Dave Dudley's 'Six Days On The Road' [ written incidentally by Earl Green, Carl Montgomery and E.Spruth]; Waylon Jennings ' Drinking and Dreaming', Merle Haggard's ' Mama Tried', Clint Black's ' Killin' Time', Alan Jackson's ' Livin' On Love' and Don Williams' ' Come Early Morning', amongst many. Partner dancers were also kept busy and amassed for the Gatlins' ' Bitter They Are, the Harder they Fall', Randy Travis and George Jones ' A Few Ole Country Boys', dave Sherriff's ' I Couldn't Find The Words To Say Goodbye', George Jones' ' Wine Coloured Roses' and Jack Greene's ' There Goes My Everything'. I was pleased to hear Conway Twitty's No 1 Smash from 1979 ' I May Never Get To Heaven', [ written by singer / songwriter Bill Anderson and Buddy Killen], a new song in Phil's catalogue and on his latest cd As is their custom, these lads treated us to another fine show. December 2nd 2004 Phil And Ken
There was an air of expectation tonight as our guests were one of the best double acts on the Country Music circuit, the dynamic duo from Doncaster , Phil and Ken. Each of them started their musical career in Rock'n' Roll, a genre still close to Ken's heart especially, but first played together in the band 'The Davison's' other bands included ' Mustang' in 1979 during which time they toured with ' Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboy's and Leona Williams, whose husband Merle Haggard spontaneously appeared on stage one night and sang with them. Later on they featured in 'The Shack Band' from 1983 to 1989. Since 1993 however they have concentrated on Solo and Duo performances. Phil plays rhythm guitar whilst Ken plays bass and vocals are shared. They both have a strong admiration for George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Larry Gatlin all of whose numbers proliferate their act. As we've come to expect, they put on a wonderful show from the opening bars of ' Rambling Fever' to their final encore 'The Fireman' Both have extremely powerful voices and harmonies brilliantly with each other and how refreshing it is to hear songs not often heard in our club e.g.; Stonewall Jackson's ' Don't be Angry' Clint Black's 'Nobody's Home' The Gatlin's ' All The Gold In California' Johnny Paycheck's ' Someone To Give My Love To' and Hank Williams Jnr's. 'Stoned At The Jukebox' etc. Their show also includes loads of stand-up comedy, mainly from Phil who's very often cheeky but affectionate quips and stories can have the audience in stitches. The dancers were kept busy all night and those of us who enjoy a sing - song were treated to loads of Golden Oldies including, 'Goodhearted Woman' ' Crazy Arms' 'Gypsy Woman' ' There Goes My Everything' and ' Heartaches By The Number', etc. Worth a special mention were the renditions of Burt Bacharach's ' Your the Answer to Everything' and Dave Sherriff's ' I Just Couldn't Find The Words To Say Goodbye' With performances of such quality and consistency these two fellas will always be welcomed to our club. Cyril Insley. November 13th 2003 Phil and Ken 'What a splendid evening' was the general comment at the end of the Doncaster Duo's performance. Phil Lloyds' minor throat problems did not mar or deter his enthusiasm humour and delivery. Ken Durrans shared equally the vocals and confirmed his admiration of George Jones by singing several songs associated with him. Their songs ranged from the 40's--Hank Williams to more recent numbers by the Maverick's all of which made the show a memorable experience Cyril Insley
