December 7th 2007 Robbo
The one aspect of a Robbo show that is certain, is that you will get a non- stop concert of good old country songs all evening long, sung in fine style.
Tonight was no exception as he gave us forty - six full length songs, no medleys, which is the most any singer has delivered at our club. As a consequence everyone went home in a joyous mood, dancers, listeners, and singalongers alike.
Line dancers filled the floor for, Back Home Again, A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation), Six Days On The Road, Dream Lover, ( a country hit for Billy 'Crash' Craddock, Ricky Nelson and Glen Campbell and Tanya Tucker), Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down, All My Ex's Live In Texas, Crying My Heart Out Over You, and others.
Partner dancers were kept busy too. Their favourites included, Crazy Arms, Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile, Don't Close Your Eyes, The Dance, The Chair, and others.
Other songs i particularly enjoyed were, Room Full Of Roses, Amarillo By Morning, Would You Catch A Falling Star, It Takes People Like You (To Make People Like Me), Blue Side Of Lonesome, Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico, Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me and the pop standard countryfied by Willy Nelson, All Of Me.
Yet again, we had a superb performance from an established country singer.

March 16th 2006 ROBBO
It was a welcome return for tonight's artiste, the Wellingborough based, Robbo. As usual he gave us a non - stop show of older Country Music, ideal for both Listeners and Dancers. The Line dancers filled the floor for, Heart Over Mind, a hit for both Ray Price and Mel Tillis, Margaritaville, Ruby Ann, Sea of Heartbreak, Hello Mary Lou, Dream Lover and more. Western dancers did likewise to, True Love Ways, Am I Losing You, She Thinks I Still Care, Sing Me Back Home, Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile, and lots of others. Even the Rock `n' Rollers turned out for, Act Naturally and Don't Be Cruel, with loads of songs to sing along to. Everyone had a most enjoyable night's entertainment, and no doubt Robbo will return to provide another good show. August 11th 2005 ROBBO
Returning for his first appearance on our regular Thursday night shows, Northampton- based singer Robbo gave us a very full evening of real Country music. He delivered a wonderful mix of Ballads, Up-Tempo Dance numbers and lots of songs for partner dancing too. There were quite a few melodies that we had not experienced before and amongst these were Conway Twitty's ' I Don't Know A Thing About Love (The Moon Song),' and ' Rest Your Love On Me', a Country hit in 1979 for the Bee Gee's but a No1 smash hit for Conway two years later; Charley Pride's ' Snakes Crawl At Night' and I'm Just Me'; ' Heart Over Mind', a hit for both Porter Waggoner and Ray Price; and ' Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye', originally a 60's Pop Hit for The Casinos but more recently a Country chart entry for Neal McCoy, all of which complete songs with not one medley involved. As usual he put on a great show for a smaller than usual audience which in no way affected his fine performance. Cyril Insley
September 4th 2004 Saturday Special with Robbo
Appearing for the first time at our club, tonight's guest artiste travelled from Wellingborough, Northants. Robbo has been involved in the music business more than thirty years. In the mid - seventies he was lead singer with ' Barbary Coast '. The band still tour with visiting foreign performers but Robbo also does a lot of Solo work of Country, Sixties and middle of the road music. The first session of this singer / guitarist consisted of a good mix of both Country and Pop and after performing twenty songs, he had to be reminded to take a break. It made quite a change to hear David Allan Coe's ' Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile' and ' Jack Daniels if you please, the Everly Brothers 'Cathy's Clown' Elvis' 'Mess of Blues' and Anita Bryant's ' Paper Roses.' For his second session, Robbo was joined on stage by his friend 'John' who duetted on, Marty Robbins,' 'Ribbon of Darkness' before doing solos of 'The Running Kind ' 'Song For The Life' and Devil's Right Hand'. Robbo gave us another splendid mix of music including 'Ruby Ann' 'Your so Square' 'Summer Holiday' 'The Young Ones 'White Sports Coat' etc.etc. His third and final act even included more variety with 'When you were Sweet Sixteen' 'Fields of Athenry' 'Forty Shades of Green,' for lovers of Irish music. Also included were more Pop and Country to bring the total number of songs to a remarkable fifty. Everyone present, dancers and listeners alike, gave him a wonderful ovation when he eventually concluded his performance. This may have been his first appearance here, but i'm sure it won't be the last. Cyril Insley Top |
