August 10th 2006 SALT CREEK ( 5 Piece Band)
Tonight was the first occasion we had invited a 5-piece band outfit to provide our entertainment and what a splendid job they did.
Lead singer Caroline and husband Pat McGrath have already performed at the club as a duo and were joined this evening by Drummer, Ingrid Bromley, Bass player, Steve Heffernan and Steel guitarist, Jamie Lennon.
All of them hail from Birmingham and come from families with a long pedigree in music. In fact they have been long time friends but only came together as a unit in October 2005. Each is excellent at their own chosen roll within the group and one of the first things you notice is how much they enjoy performing. Happy smiling faces, quite a bit of micky taking, which makes for a super show.
Caroline has a lovely melodic voice and delivers most of the vocals. However, in the singing department she is admirably assisted by multi - instrumentalist Pat, and Steve who both take lead at times and provide great harmonies.
Their programme was a lovely mix of new and old country and the variety suited both dancers and listeners alike. Amongst Caroline's solos were Martina McBrides, Ashes, Carolyn Dawn Johnson's, I Think Of You That Way, Gretchen Wilson's, One Budweiser and When I Think About Cheatin', Lorrie Morgan's, Train Wreck Of Emotion and One Of Those Nights and Faith Hill's, Piece Of My Heart, originally covered by Erma Franklin but a hit for both Big Brother And The Holding Company and Shaggy.
Pat's songs included, Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down, Don't Close your Eyes and One Night At A Time. Steve contributed, Branded Man, Chattahoochie, Bluer Than That and finally, Lay Down Sally, as an encore. However just before this, the band played Working Man Blues which gave Caroline the opportunity to introduce each member and allowed them the chance to display their individual skills.
All night they provided wonderful entertainment and all at our club wish them well for their forthcoming tour of the U.S.A.later in the year.
